1 a. Equal human dignity by birth:
17:70 Surely, We have conferred dignity on the descendants of the human species (as a birth right, regardless of where the child is born).
95:4 Indeed, We have created the human being (all of them) in the best design.
1 b. All humans endowed with reason and conscience:
40:67 He is the One Who created you from dust, then from the gametes, then from an embryo, and then He brings you forth as an infant. And then you attain full strength and afterward you grow old; though some of you die earlier. All this He ordains so that you reach a term appointed, and along the way, develop your insight.
8:22 Surely, the worst of creations in the sight of God are the deaf and the dumb who do not use their reason.
45:5 And in the alternation of the night and the day, and in the means of sustenance which God sends down from the height, reviving the earth which had been lifeless, and in the change of winds and seasons - in all this are signs for people who use their reason.
22:46 Have they never journeyed about the earth, letting their hearts gain wisdom, and causing their ears to hear? Indeed, it is not their eyes that become blind, but their hearts that are in the chests become blind.
1 c. All humans should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood:
2:213 Mankind were one single community.
10:19 All mankind were but one community (and are meant to be so); then they differed. Had it not been for a Word that went forth from your Lord (the Law of Free Will), He would have judged their disputes immediately.
4:1 O Mankind! You have a common origin. Your Lord began the creation of life at the unicellular level. There was one life cell that divided into two, male and female (6:99). (Evolution took place, as has been alluded to in this Book (16:8, 20:50, 21:30, 22:45, 30:20, 31:28, 51:49). Eventually, numerous men and women came into existence on the earth. Since all of you have this common origin, you must consider all mankind as one community (10:19, 57:25). Your first step in that direction is to strengthen your family relations. Be careful of your duty to God in Whose Name you expect rights from one another. God ever watches over you.
2 a. Gender equity:
Although the Qur'an did allow some ancient levels and behaviours towards women, it already tried to give them their first human rights by giving rights them to have property, divorce and an equal status in front of God. When looking at these verses, it is clear which direction the Qur'an wanted us to to go, and which things to leave behind on the path.
33:35 Verily, for peaceful men and peaceful women, men who protect fellow humans from harm and women who protect fellow humans from harm, dutiful men and dutiful women, truthful men and truthful women, steadfast men and steadfast women, humble men and humble women, charitable men and charitable women, abstinent men and abstinent women (abstaining from all vices), chaste men and chaste women, men who remain mindful of God and women who remain mindful (of God), for them, God has readied forgiveness and protection against harm and an immense reward.
2:228 Women, in all universal accepted equity, have rights similar to men.
2 b. The only superiority over another is righteous conduct, not race, gender, nationality or creed:
49:13 O Mankind! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes so that you might (affectionately) come to know one another. Surely, the most honored among you, in the sight of God, is the one who is best in conduct. God is Knower, Aware.
46:19 And for all there will be ranks according to what they did so that He may recompense their actions. And none shall be wronged.
3. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person:
4:75 What has happened to you that you do not fight in the cause of God? Defenseless men, women, and children are being oppressed and crying, "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors, and raise for us protectors and helpers."
9:6 (O Messenger!) If anyone of the idolaters seeks your protection or a safe passage, grant him protection from the State. Convey to him the Word of God, and then send him to a place where he feels safe and secure. This kindness on your part is mandatory because they are people who do not know (as having not yet seen the beauty of the Divine System.)
4 a. No one can be held as a slave and slaves still present must be set free one by one:
The Qur'an did not forbade the present slavery directly, but it closed up the doors towards creating new slaves and at the same time making the concept of freeing slaves a virtue. In this, it made ancient society ready to let go of slavery, but sadly few would listen to this.
24:33 If any of the male and female servants and slaves desires a deed of emancipation, write it for them ensuring good for them by way of rehabilitation. If you find that they are ready, and give them from the wealth of God which He has bestowed upon you.
4:92 there is the duty of freeing an adherrent to peace from bondage; may it be slavery, extreme poverty, crushing debt or oppression.
5:89 Or, freeing one human being from bondage, whether it is slavery, extreme poverty, heavy debt, or oppression.
4 b. No slaves can be made in any situation, not even in war. Just free them or ransom them:
47:4 (The prisoners of war), you may either set them free or ransom them, until the war ends.
5. No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment:
The Qur'an does allow capital punishment in the case of murder or crimes against humanity, but it implores to forgive the person. Also when talking about crimes for fasad the verses as 5:33 can be understood as in the words of scholar Ahmed Ali: "Tuqatta'a could mean restrain them by putting fetters on one hand and one leg", and yusallabu means to execute somebody in a known fashion, thus using the techniques of the time when the verse is read. The Qur'an always presents tortures punishments as something done by the enemies of the people pursuing peace and reformation in society, and thus hinting that cruel ways of punishments are inhuman. Stoning for example is only used by the enemies of the prophets, it is never given as a way of punishment in Islam itself. The act of stoning was an ancient Jewish practice that found its way into Muslim law, and should be removed immediately. But thankfully, most Islamic countries have forbidden it already, although not based on the idea that it is not found in the Qur'an.
20:47 So both of you go to him and say, "We are two messengers of your Lord. Let the Children of Israel go with us, and stop torturing and persecuting them (la tu'adhadhib means do not punish or torture) forthwith. We have come to you with a message from your Lord. And Peace be upon him who follows right guidance.
16:90 God commands justice, creating balance in the society, benefiting humanity, kindness to His creation, and giving to relatives. And He forbids all indecent deeds, immodesty, stinginess and transgression. He instructs you (again) so that you may take it to heart.
2:190 And fight in God's cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression and transgression-for, verily, God does not love aggressors.
6, 7, 8 and 10. Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person in all equality before the law:
5:42 If they come to you, then you may judge between them or turn away from them; and if you turn away from them then they cannot harm you in the least; and if you judge then judge between them with justice. God loves those who are just.
4:58 God commands you to entrust your offices to those who are capable, competent and sincere. They shall rule and judge equitably. Give your trusts to whom they belong. The Enlightenment from God is a blessing for you. He is Hearer, Seer of all that transpires in the Universe and in your society.
7:181 Among the communities We have created there have been those who guide with truth and establish justice with it.
5:8 O You who are entrusted with the safety of your fellow beings. Be upholders of justice for the sake of God as witnesses to the truth. Let not the hatred of any people move you away from justice. Deal justly. That is closer to being upright. Be mindful of your duty to God. Surely, God is fully Aware of what you do.
42:38-43 42:38 They respond to their Lord by establishing Salaat, and conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and they keep open for the welfare of others what We have given them. And whenever gross injustice is inflicted upon them, they defend themselves and stand up for their rights. The recompense for a crime shall be its equivalence, but whoever forgives and makes right, then his reward is upon God. He does not like the violators of human rights. And those who stand up for their rights and defend themselves, when they have been wronged, for such, there is no blame. The blame is on those who oppress people and cause disorder on earth resorting to aggression, unprovoked. They are the ones for whom there is an awful doom. Certainly, whoever is patient and forgives, that is from the strength of character.
9, 11 and 12. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention, interference or exile. And no one can penal or take away the honour of the person or family:
Proof must be given:
24:4 (Protecting the honor of a woman is extremely important.) Those who accuse chaste women and then fail to produce four witnesses (the court of law shall order) eighty lashes to such accusers. And never in the future accept their testimony. They have drifted away from morality.
49:6 O you who are entrusted with the safety of your fellow beings, if any iniquitous person person brings any news to you, you shall first investigate, lest you commit injustice towards some people, out of ignorance, then become sorry and remorseful for what you have done.
39:7 No laden one will bear the burden of another.
49:11 O You who have chosen to be graced with belief! No people shall make mockery of other people, for they may be better than they are. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they are. And neither shall you defame nor be sarcastic to one another. And do not call each other by (offensive) nicknames. After attaining faith, evil is (calling by) names that are far from decency. Those who do not return to the right way are the wrongdoers.
13 and 15. Freedom of movement and travel:
7:128 Moses assured his people, "Seek help in God and patiently persevere. Remember that the earth belongs to God. He grants it as a heritage to His servants according to His laws. And the future belongs to the righteous and upright."
12:56 And it was such that We gave Joseph authority in the land, to travel in it as he pleases. We bestow Our mercy upon whom We please, and We do not waste the reward of the good doers.
34:18 And We had set, between them and the towns We had blessed, many oases with townships within sight of one another, and thus We had made traveling easy, "Travel safely in this land by night or by day."
29:20 Say, "Travel on earth and find out how He originated creation. And how afterward, God brings forth entirely new forms. Surely, God is the Supreme Designer of all things."
4:97"Was not the earth of God spacious enough for you to migrate?"
14. Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution:
9:6 (O Messenger!) If anyone of the idolaters seeks your protection or a safe passage, grant him protection from the State. Convey to him the Word of God, and then send him to a place where he feels safe and secure. This kindness on your part is mandatory because they are people who do not know (as having not yet seen the beauty of the Divine System.)
15. Everybody has the right to get married or not by their own wishes:
24:32 And marry the singles among you, (whether they are widowed, divorced or bachelors). They may marry the righteous among your male and female servants. If they are poor, God will enrich them with His bounty. God is of Infinite means, and He knows all things.
24:33 And do not force your daughters into marriage when they have desired independence, in order that you may make a gain in the goods of this worldly life.
17. Protection of property:
4:6 Test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage, then if you determine in them sound judgment, then give them their wealth, and do not deliberately consume it wastefully or quickly before they grow up. Whoever is rich, then let him not claim anything, and if he is poor then let him consume only properly. If you give to them their wealth, then make a witness for them, and God is enough for Reckoning.
2:85 Yet it is you who subdue and slay your own people, and evict a weak faction among you from their homes. And you support one another in hurting the community and sowing the seeds of discord. And when these homeless people get enslaved by others and are brought to you, you ransom them, whereas it was unlawful for you to evict them in the first place. What! Do you wish to accept one part of the scripture and reject the other? Think then, what the reward of such wrongdoing must be - nothing but disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection the most grievous chastisement. God is not unaware of what you do.
24:27 O You are entrusted with the safety of your fellow beings. Do not enter the houses other than your own until you have obtained permission and greeted their people with peace. That is best for you if you would bear it in mind.
4:20And you have given one of them a large amount, then do not take anything from it.
18 and 19. Freedom of religion, thought and expression:
2:256 (Although this message has been sent down by the Almighty) there is absolutely no compulsion or coercion in Religion. Whoever rejects false gods (such as the clergy, human 'authorities') and attains conviction in God, has grasped the Unbreakable Support. God is Hearer, Knower.
22:40 Those who have been evicted from their homes unjustly, for no reason other than saying, "Our Lord is God!" For, if God had not enabled people to defend themselves against one another, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and masjids, where the Name of God is oft mentioned, would surely have been destroyed. And God will certainly help those who help Him. God is Mighty, Powerful.
2:62 Indeed, those who believe (in the Qur'an and call themselves Muslims, peaceful and protecting other human beings), and those who are Jews, and Christians and those who follow other religions; whoever truly believes in God and the Last Day and does works that benefit humanity, their reward is with their Lord. For them shall be no fear from without, nor shall grief touch them from within.
5:69 "Those who acknowledge, those who are Jewish, those who are the followers of other religions, and the Nazarenes… Whoever acknowledges God and the Last day and does good works, then they will have nothing to fear nor will they grieve."
3:71 O People of the Book! Why do you cloak the truth with falsehood, and conceal the truth that you are so well aware of?
25:63 The true servants of the Beneficent are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant ones address them, they say, "Peace!"
4:140 He has already revealed to you in the Book that, when you hear the revelations of God rejected and ridiculed, sit not with them unless they engage in some other conversation.
6:112 Remember, We have appointed to every prophet enemies. The rebellious among the urban and the rural populations rose in opposition, (since the message struck at their personal interests.) They plotted and inspired each other with fancy words. If your Lord willed, they would not do that. Disregard them and whatever they fabricate.
20. Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association:
4:101 When you go forth in the land, there is no blame on you if you shorten the congregations, if you fear that those who bury your rights may attack you. Surely, the rejecters of rights are an open enemy to you.
3:97 Therein are clear messages (to achieve that coveted goal and recall) how Abraham once took his stand (against all divisions of humanity and was granted the leadership of all mankind 2:124-125). Those who enter the System symbolized thereby shall find inner peace and external security. So, joining the Hajj Convention at this Meeting Point for the cause of God alone is due on all people who (understand the noble objective and) have the circumstantial means to undertake the visit. One who denies (this wisdom, should know that) certainly, God is Absolutely Independent of His creation.
21. Everybody has the right to participate in the government and be part of it:
42:38-43 They respond to their Lord by establishing Salaat, and conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and they keep open for the welfare of others what We have given them.
4:58 God commands you to entrust your offices to those who are capable, competent and sincere. They shall rule and judge equitably. Give your trusts to whom they belong. The Enlightenment from God is a blessing for you. He is Hearer, Seer of all that transpires in the Universe and in your society.
22. Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality:
13:17 While what is of benefit to mankind, abides on earth.
23:61 It is those who race with one another to improve the quality of life for humanity, and it is those who are worthy of winning good things.
20:118-119 "Indeed, you are living the life of Paradise (on this very earth) where you are guaranteed never to go hungry, nor go unsheltered. Neither do you go thirsty, nor are you exposed to the burning sun."
2:177 Righteousness and exponential development of the 'self' depends not on whether you turn your faces to East or West. But righteousness is that: . One has conviction in God, . And the Last Day, . And the Angels, .. And the Book, .. And the prophets. .. And that he gives of his cherished wealth to: .. Family and relatives, .. Orphans, . Widows, .. Those left helpless in the society, . basic needs, And those whose hard-earned income fails to meet their .. Those whose running businesses have stalled, .. The ones who have lost their jobs, .. Whose life has stalled for any reason, .. The disabled, . The needy wayfarer, son of the street, the homeless, the one who travels to you for assistance, .. Those who ask for help, and . Those whose necks are burdened with any kind of bondage, oppression, crushing debts and extreme hardship of labor. . (And righteous are) those who strive to establish the institution of Salaat, (2:3. 2:53) .. And help set up the Economic System of Zakaat. .. They are true to their pledge whenever they make one. . And they remain steadfast in physical or emotional distress and in times of peril. It is those who have proven themselves to be true, and it is those who are living upright.
51:19 And in their wealth was the Divinely ordained right of those who ask and those who are deprived.
2:219 And they ask you what they should give. Say, "All that is surplus." Thus God makes His messages plain for you, that you may reflect.
6:141 He is the One Who creates bounties for you, such as gardens that are cultivated, greens that are wild, palm trees of various kinds, crops in diversity, olives and pomegranates, fruits that are similar and diverse. Enjoy them, but give Him His Right on the Day of the Harvest. And waste not the bounty of God. Surely, He does not love the wasteful.
23. Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment. Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work. Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection. Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests:
53:39-41 And that every human being shall be responsible for, and compensated for, his labor. And that his effort (and not the results) will be seen. And then he will be fully rewarded for it.
21:94 Whoever works for the good of others and protecting them, his efforts will never be rejected. Indeed, We are recording it for him.
24. Everyone has the right to rest and leisure:
24:58 Before you engage in your assignments at dawn, at noon when you are resting with light clothes, and after you have completed your assignments at night. These are three private times for you.
25 and 26. Everybody has a right of good social housing, healthcare, running water, education and sustenance, be it male, female or child:
7:43 Rivers will flow beneath them.
